My niece uses Linux!

For her birthday, I gave my niece a laptop.  She wanted a Mac, but I offered her someone better, a Thinkpad T61.  I asked if she wanted Windows Vista or Linux.  She said "Using Windows makes her feel dirty."  Great, Linux it is.  I asked her if she wanted it to look like Windows or Mac, she said Mac.  I asked her what applications she needed, and she said a word processor and some image editing tools.  The solution was a piece of cake, Debian with XFCE.

After looking through a couple of Debian distros that use XFCE, I sent her some screenshots and asked her to pick which one she wanted.  She chose Imagine Linux.  She was excited about it but practically blew a gasket when I showed her the Compiz cube!  I showed her some of the basic applications, how to use the package manager to search for new applications, and how to connect to networks.

She showed her friend all of this, and now I have to figure out how to get Imagine Linux installed on her friend's laptop, from 1,500 miles away.
