The greatest fight scene ever!

The fight between Tony Minaro and his guido friends against the Puerto Ricans, in Saturday Night Fever, was good.

The Avengers battle over New York City was better.

But the best fight scene ever filmed was the bathroom fight in "The Warriors".

My thoughts on Amanda Todd

I was listening to this week's episode of 'Off The Wall', and below is my response to what I heard. You may want to get some backstory before continuing. Search Amanda Todd on Wikipedia, then continue on.

To Kody Maxson,

I hope you die a painless, quiet death, only after you have lived a life filled with as much pain and misery as you have caused to Amanda Todd, every day until your death. Also, I hope you get butt-fucked by a rhino with AIDS! By the way, given the opportunity, I would love to kick you ass from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, the long way around. That's right Kody, I would kick your ass across the Atlantic Ocean, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean. I must admit that justice will have been served by the time I reach India, but I would still continue to mercilessly beat you, for my own amusement, you sick piece of shit (she was 12 years old). I would do to your kids what you did to Amanda, but there are lines that decent people do not cross. If you were a decent person, Amanda would still be alive.

To the boy that 'liked' (read as: fucked, in more ways than one) Amanda, the girl that beat up Amanda, and the person that encouraged her assailant to punch her,

Unlike the pedophile named Kody Maxson, I hope your death is a painful one. It would please me greatly if your painful death included being burned alive or drowning, as both are excruciating. I would crucify you sorry sacks of shit, but your parents would probably lobby the Vatican to canonize your worthless asses. I hope everything that you subjected Amanda to befalls your children; and I hope both you and your children, like Kody Maxson, get butt-fucked by a rhino with AIDS. You are all a bunch of cowardly canadian pricks, every last one of you.

To Amanda,

I know that you will never be able to read this, but this may provide comfort for someone who loves you and is looking for solace. Amanda, you were a beautiful young lady, who made a mistake. That mistake haunted you for the rest of your tragically short life. The contribution that you may have made to this world will never be realized, but you will not be forgotten. That you shared your story before your demise may help save another life, including someone that I know and love. I hate to quote or paraphrase movies, but, "May you find the peace in death, that you couldn't find in life." R.I.P.

Building a Home Theater PC

I decided to give my girlfriend the gift of a home Theater PC. So far I have spent $100 on a refurbished HP Compaq desktop PC, from MicroCenter. Given all of the spare parts and open-source software available to me, this will only cost me $100, if everything goes according to plan.

So far, I have upgraded the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. The 40GB HDD is proving to be a little bit of a pain in the ass. I got errors on a disk check that erased the MFT. I'm currently trying to restore the partition table; and hopefully, I will not have to do a clean install. Additionally, I hope that I can use the 40GB HDD as the OS drive, with the 200GB HDD as additional storage. If not, then the 200 GB HDD will be the only drive.

As far as controlling the PC, I do not want wires, not do I want to buy a wireless KB/mouse solution, but thanks to synergy, I can use an existing laptop and share its KB/mouse via wifi.

I am excited about this. I just hope I can finish this project in time to watch the Jets game tomorrow.

Open Letter to Muslims that want to kill people over a YouTube video

Please direct all of your violent aggression (oddly, that is what you are most known and criticized for) toward the Westboro Baptist Church, address below.  Fly planes into it, bomb it, burn it, or do whatever savage act you feel is justified, in defense of your god or prophet or whatever nonsense you have been brainwashed with; just leave the rest of us alone.  I am trying to be nice about this.

Global Climate Change

NYC is in the middle of what will, by definition, be its 3rd heatwave this summer. Summer started on June 21-22, and this summer is following a winter with no snow. The last snowfall in NYC was 10/29/11, trust me, I know because it was the day that I was supposed to go to Oktoberfest at Bear Mountain.

So, given these facts, I have one question for Rush (drug-addicted, hypocritical misogynist) Limbaugh, Glenn (the reason why the term 'batshit crazy' was invented) Beck, and Sarah (I wouldn't fuck her because I'm afraid her insanity is contagious) Palin, and that is: Can we say 'global warming' now?

I'm not really asking for permission, but if I was, I certainly wouldn't be asking for it from the 3 best arguments for birth-control and abortion.

New Year's Day v. Spring Cleaning

Everybody makes New Year's resolutions and fail miserably, except me. Why? Am I a superhuman fantastic specimen of humanity? Yes, I am, but that has nothing to do with it. The reason I don't fail at New Year's resolutions is because I do not make them anymore. Instead, I wait until Spring, when I do Spring cleaning. I have found that Spring is considerably more inspiring than New Year's Eve/Day.
First of all, I am motivated to clean my apartment (something I hate doing) when Spring comes around, and as part of 'Spring Cleaning', I find that there are improvements to myself that I want to make.  Come New Year's Day, not only am I still pissed off that I couldn't go to such & such business on December 25th because of those fucking Christians, but I am fighting off my annual bout with seasonal depression, with my only weapon being that my birthday is only 35 days away and a hangover.
Second, the vernal equinox marks one of the only 2 times throughout the year that the sun is directly over the equator. Did you think the word 'equinox' was a coincidence? I can name 3 days that are spend recovering from gluttonous behavior, Jan. 1, Mar. 18, and the day after Thanksgiving. I could name more, but there is no need to spike the ball. So, overindulgence, at least in my eyes, seems less special than Spring. Later in the year, I will go into why Halloween is more than just candy (again, I will slam fucking Christians).
Third, New Year's day is arbitrary. Dick Clark freezing his nuts off at Times Square does not make New Year's Eve/Day important to anyone other than a TV executive. What does New Year's Day offer you? Sales from retailers for the shit they couldn't get you to buy before Christmas? Pathetic sporting events like the NHL's 'Winter Classic' (really, hockey outside, WHAT THE FUCK!) and college football (the reason why Johnny can't read, because being able to spell the word "diploma" doesn't disqualify you from getting one in this country)? The only thing that New Year's day is good for is dealing with a hangover. I don't have a celebration in honor of Spring, but as the weather (here in New York City) becomes more temperate (I'm a 65-85 degree day kind of guy), I want to open my windows and breathe the fresh air (as much as I can kind in New York City), in appreciation of the new beginning.
New Year's Day is a day, but Spring is a feeling. Over the past few years, I have made myself a better person in spite of New Year's Day, by finding my inspiration, and my inspiration is Spring. What I do is identify a goal for the new year (not New Year's) and work toward achieving it by Spring. While everyone else breaks their New Year's resolutions in 2 days and says, "Fuck it," I do not mark the finality of the past year as the point at which I am miraclulously a better person and face the disappointment of being the same piece of shit that I was the last time this planet was at the same position it was in relation to the sun when I don't live up to that expectation. As the flowers bloom, I grow.  It's a process.  Builid up to it, and enjoy the ride.

Server Migration

Here is what is on the agenda:

- Update all of my computers

- Migrate my server

The updates are simple enough, but the server migration will be interesting. Why? Well, first of all, I'm going from a whitebox with a 665MHz P3 and 512MB RAM to an IBM Thinkpad 600e with a 366MHz P2 and 224MB RAM. Second, I will have to use an external hard drive over a USB 1.1 port. Finally, given its lesser specs, I will have to decide how much I want to push this server.

I know what you are asking. Why the hell would you do such a thing? Are you a masochist? I might be a masochist, which would explain why I continue to go to my office, but the reason that I am making this move is three-fold.

First, if I am leaving something on all the time, I think it is prudent to pick the one that uses less power.

Second, the external drive holds a backup of data stored on another computer, so the slower bus speed really only effects my backup process (which I do every 2 weeks).

As far as how much I am looking to get out of this system, without X, I can do quite a few things with text and curses based tools. I managed to get a DVD burner in there, so burning discs is a breeze with cdw. Between the mv, cp, and rm commands and mc, I have file management taken care of. On this particular line of Thinkpads, configuring the sound card is a bitch, but once it is working, mp3blaster works well. For text-based web-browsing, I haven't decided between links2, w3m, or elinks yet, but they all do the job. I check my email with alpine. Nano is my text editor of choice, because it is simple (I'm not a programmer, I just need to edit a configuration file every once in a while). Saidar is cool system monitor, as is htop. I would use rtorrent for torrents, but this is a task that I do not think this piece of hardware can handle, though I may, on occasion wget a file or two. For a samba server (both file and print server), an SSH server, and a local DNS cache, I think this laptop will do everything that I need and not cost me as much on electricity (how many DNS cache server can you burn a DVD or listen to LTTLS on).

I'm having fun this weekend. I hope you have fun this weekend, too.

My Easter post, part 2

In my lifetime, there has been one new lifeform created. It didn't exist when I was born, but it did by then time I reached puberty. That is the HIV virus. Now, either it evolved, or God created it. If the former is true, then Darwin was right. If the latter is the case, then your god is a fucking asshole! Take your pick.

My Easter Post

With this holiday coming, I starting thinking about Christianity and my contempt for it. Anyone that knows me knows how I feel about faith, religion, and churches. The funniest thing happened this week, while I was thinking of new ways to test the faith of the believers of the mass delusion known as Christianity. I was listening to Christopher Titus' podcast and came to a stunning conclusion, a split second before Christopher Titus explained what his daughter said when told of the back story of Easter, that Jesus is a zombie!

He died, and then he rose from the dead. That sounds like a zombie to me. I like zombies, but I do not worship Jesus. Instead, I have decided to worship the first zombie to appear on camera in George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead".

Whitney Houston

In case you haven't heard, Whitney Houston died. Boo fucking hoo!

A few months ago, my mother's uncle died. I don't know exactly what the legal relationship is, but I know that his mother is my great-grandmother. That is a relationship that can be proven by DNA.

My question is, why the fuck is this country so enraptured by the death of Whitney Fucking Houston? First of all, I grieved the death of my mother's uncle, someone I knew and loved, in five days and got back to doing what I knew made him happy (seeing me being successful at whatever it was that I wanted to do). More than seven days later, I have to deal with her "memorial service" on my television. Second, for all of you that are grieving, have you ever met Whitney Houston? Do you know her, or are you projecting upon her your image of the perfect life, just because she could do something you cannot do? I can play guitar and drums, as well as turn the most paltry computer that you what to throw in the garbage into something useful. Is my funeral going to be broadcast nationwide? Think about this, while she was busy doing all of the drugs that killed her, do you think that Whitney cared in the least about whether or not you were about to make your mortgage payment or feed your kids? Third, where the fuck were you when she was alive?

Linux is NOT Freeware!

Yesterday, I was discussing a few things with a co-worker. He asked me about how I got a particular configuration on my screen, and I explained that I had to do it manually. I told him that there was software that did it automatically, but I couldn't use it because of its license (free for non-commercial use). After explaining that using that particular software on a laptop issued to me as a function and for the purpose of performing my job (as a third party vendor for a commercial enterprise) would violate the 'non-commercial' clause of the license, I explained to him that my preference is the use of free software. He asked what I use. Obviously, I replied, "Linux".I explained Linux's license, and he said, "So, it's freeware." This is the same thing my brother said 2 months ago, but I didn't bother to take the time to explain the difference, because my brother is a fucking idiot.Back to my co-worker. I explained how you can download a piece of software from download.com and have to agree to a license that does not allow you to redistribute it, modify it, or use it for a commercial purpose. Then I explained how Linux can be used. I explained that Linux is 'free' and 'open source', citing the 4 freedoms as the definition of "free" and pointing out that 'free of cost' was not one of them. I even told him that I would be perfectly in line with the license (the GPL), if every six months, I took the latest version of Ubuntu, striped out all branding and artwork, and renamed it 'Go Fuck Yourself'ix, as long as I complied with the availability of source code provisions of the GPL.I ended the conversation by equating the draconian measures of SOPA/PIPA as a result of the ignorance of, the lack of respect for, and the flagrant violation of copyright laws in the Corporate States of Corporaterica. I don't know if I converted him, but at least I explained to him why, professionally, I abide by software licenses. The reason is because I put my employer and our client at risk of a lawsuit. If I was allowed to use Linux and the wealth of free software to do my job, I could do it much more efficiently and without risk of letigation.

Uptime

My personal SSH, Print, File server has an uptime of 12 days. It would have been 124 days if not for a power outage, guess how long ago. I'll give you a hint, 12 days.

I have had this server for four years, and I am still trying to hit 1 year uptime. Twice, I took it down, once to change the motherboard, and again to change the hard drive configuration. Both of these were within 2 months.

So, why the fuck can I not hit 1 year of uptime, other than because ConEd cannot reliably provide power, something that they reliably charge me for?

Turning 40

I feel old. My 40th birthday was 2 days ago, and I have spent the last 48 hours thinking about what has happened throughout my 40 trips around the sun. Here are a few things:

1) The Cold War end and the U.S.S.R. collapsed,

2) The Berlin Wall came down,

3) The U.S. elected a black president,

4) There were two presidents who were not elected (Ford & Bush the stupid),

5) The U.S. invaded Iraq, twice,

6) The Mets won the World Series once, the Islanders won the Stanley Cup 4 times, and the Jets still haven't returned to the Super Bowl.

7) The greatest race car driver ever died during a race, and so did Dale Earnhardt.

It has been interesting whirling around the sun so many times, but I think I'm getting too old for this. I think it's time to stop the world. I want to get off, and relax.

On Megaupload

Bill Maher once joked about how churches don't pay taxes, yet they reap the benefits provided by tax-paying citizens. The example that he used was a fire, and his solution was for the church to pray for rain.

While incredibly funny, in light of the recent arrest of the people who run Megaupload, this is actually life that should be imitating art. The FBI flew to New Zealand, at the tax-payers expense. They flew back, with their prisoners, at the tax-payers expense. I'm pretty sure that all of the surveillance and investigatory work that they did that lead them to New Zealand was also paid for by tax-payers (in fact, I'm certain of it). Now that they are in custody, tax-payers are going to have to pay for the courts to unjustly try and convict them (did I mention that they were arrested in New Zealand for breaking a US law, which they may or may not have broken, but definitely did not do in the US of BS, which makes this a global case of harassment, but I'm getting ahead of myself). After convicting them, guess who has to pay for their imprisonment? You got it, tax-payers.

I know that this arrest is a direct result of the song that Megaupload released, that had Universal Music Group's artists endorsing Megaupload. I also know that UMG violated their agreement with Youtube when the pulled the song down (if they used the DCMA, they would have broken the law, because they don't hold the copyright, but I hope that twit.tv follows through because of the takedown of their news commentary about it). What I want to know is how much did UMG pay in taxes? I know that General Electric managed to make more in one year than I will make in my lifetime and get a tax rebate, while I had my bank account raided by New York State (thank you Emigrant, did I say thank you, I mean Fuck you!).

If the viewers of Fox News can ever manage to pull their heads our of their asses, I hope this is the first thing that they realize. They have enable a system that forces them to pay the salaries of law enforcement, who then go and enforce laws that benefit people that don't pay taxes. What the fuck? Why are they so opposed to feeding the hungry and providing housing to the homeless? GE and UMG can pay for their own best interests, so why don't we make them?

Sam Adams Alpine Spring

It wasn't bad, but if I never have another one, I won't shed a tear.

Samuel Adams is known for having to truly horrible beers (Cranberry Lambic & Old Fezziwig) and the rest of their beers ranging from really good to fucking phenomenal. This one, however, is mediocre. It is described as "A Bright Citrusy Unfiltered Lager". Maybe it will taste better on a warm summer day, instead of on a snowy winter one, as that description seems to put it more in line with the Summer Ale and the Hefevizen (both of which get better as the temperature rises).

Happy MLK Day!

In the true spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I was going to get attacked by police dogs and sprayed with firehoses, but given the sub-freezing temperatures, I will celebrate MLK day by being economically oppressed.

Thanks, New York State! I hope you needed the $964 more than I did. I could have paid a month's rent with it. What did you do with it?

How much is this gonna cost?

So, the NYPD has shot yet another unarmed black man. What a surprise! I am going to buy a gun. Why? The reason is very simple, being unarmed around a cop is just too dangerous, especially if you are black.

I think I made my point, but please allow me to take this one off the rails, by applaudingthe PBA, who will inevitably come to the defense of another cop, while another black man gets buried for the crime of BBINYC (Being Black in New York City).

Setting up a laptop for a child, Part 2

So, here is what I did:

I installed Qimo 4 Kids (based on Xubuntu's last LTS release), added some of the Debian Jr. packages, installed Dansguardian (web filtering), and removed PulseAudio (WTF, how does that crap end up in an LTS release). What Qimo 4 Kids comes with out of the box is exactly what I was looking for. I was, however, a bit surprised that Dansgaurdian wasn't included (I sent the developers an email explaining how simple it was for me to configure it, after about an hour of research). I ran into audio issues with Exaile (the included audio player), so I installed Clementine. The problem I had with Clementine was worse, so I sudo apt-get purged PulseAudio and both worked fine. Since I now had two audio players, I kept the one that I prefer, Clementine.

I also installed Windows Millenium Edition with a couple of games and programs in the same vein as Qimo 4 Kids (educational and entertaining), but in order to protect the child, I disabled the network card, thus rendering the Internet inaccessible. There Microsoft, I made your piece of crap operating system safe.

Since this is a dual-boot system, I had to configure Qimo 4 Kids to have all of the Pictures, Music, and Videos accessible in both OS's and in a familiar place, without using twice as much space, so I symlinked from the home folder to the Windows 'My Documents' folder.

All that is left is getting a small mouse, a simple 2 or 4 button gamepad, and some pretty covering (a black Thinkpad won't appeal to a 5 year old girl like a Butterfly-covered Thinkpad will).

Fuck Cablevision!

My stepfather is upset. You see, he is a NY Rangers fan. Normally, when I see a Rangers fan in misery, I'm a happy guy (It's part of being an Islanders fan), but this time around, I am pissed. Why? Because the people that are making him miserable are the owners of the NY Rangers, Cablevision, and specifically the Dolan family.

Here is some backstory. The Dolan family owns both the New York Rangers and Cablevision (they may also own the Knicks, but basketball isn't a sport, and the Knicks aren't really a team). Cablevision is one of two cable provider in New York City; however, they do not compete with each other, as the city got divided up between the two, in pretty much the same way the five mafia families divided the city. Cablevision got the Bronx, much of, if not all of, Manhattan, and most of Brooklyn. Time Warner got Staten Island and Bay Ridge (a small part of Brooklyn, the pathetic part where we keep all of the cops that still actually live in the city that pays them - don't get me started). I don't know who got Queens, but then again I don't really care about Queens (Queens is what I go through in order to get somewhere worth while).

After having to deal with Cablevision whine and complain (on over the air broadcasts, no less) that because of greedy content providers (News Corp, Disney, Viacom, & GE, each at various times), we, their valued customers, would lose access to their content, including local broadcast content, what has Cablevision done? They pulled the MSG network (oh, did I forget to mention that the Dolans also own Madison Square Garden?) from Time Warner Cable subscribers in New York City! There is a word for this. Hypocrite, though accurate, is not strong enough, but DOUCHEBAG is.

First, how the City of New York allows a monopoly that they granted to own a channel that they can then leverage against the residents who are subscribed to a competitor whom they had no choosing of (in NYC, your choice is between Verizon - a telco that is just as bad, if not worse, as Cablevision - and a cable company, which ever one services the area that you live in) is beyond me.

Second, does the FCC get paid? If so, why? If this situation is not reason enough to go back to the media ownership regulations that were previously in place, I don't know what is. I don't need the FCC to protect me from Howard Stern. I need the FCC to protect me from Cablevision.

Third, to all of my stepfather's friends and co-workers who say, "Just go to Verizon FIOS," what the fuck is wrong with you? Why should the decision as to who my mother's cable and internet provider is be made by Cablevision? Maybe my mother and stepfather don't want to switch to Verizon FIOS. The level of idiocy that a person needs to possess in order to make that statement makes me wonder why New York State allows them to carry a gun. It is these morons that allow corporate amerikkka to continue to buy greater rights for themselves at the expense of those for whom rights were intended. Let's just hope I don't end up in a state court.

Normally, I would end with three points, but I actually have a fourth point. Where the fuck is the NHL on this? The NHL has a rule that forbids the ownership of an NHL team in one market and a team in another professional league in another market if an NHL team exists in that market, which is the reason why Howard Milstein sold his stake in the NY Islanders to buy a stake on the Washington Redskins (damn Capitals). How is it that the NHL can allow Cablevision to blackout, within New York City, Rangers games. If Time Warner is in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Cablevision is also blacking out Islanders games. But that is not all. As the New Jersey Devils are also broadcast on the MSG network, Time Warner customers that are fans of any of these teams are fucked, thanks to Cablevision. Hey commissioner Bettman, do you have any comment on this? I sat through a season of Islanders games not being broadcast live, because Cablevision got to choose which games it would broadcast, and it always seemed to be the Islanders who were the odd man out, yet the Rangers games always got aired. How about some ownership regulation, when media ownership or delivery is involved?
